PA: Bald Eagle State Forest – Day 2…

Navigation with Paper Maps…

10 July 2022: Working on maps, plotting and route planning while exploring in the forest today. Headed out to the Poe Paddy overlook and then a cool hike through a metal tunnel to a river walk. It was a nice and mellow day to wrap up our northeast overland exploration…

PA: Bald Eagle State Forest – Day 1…

Back to Camp…

9 July 2022: A last weekend camping trip as part of our North East Roadtrip — we headed to Pennsylvania for two nights dispersed camping in the Bald Eagle State Forest where we could drive some easy trails and practice navigation…

LI: The Fourth of July…

Fireworks for the Fourth…

4 July 2022: We celebrated the Fourth of July with fireworks in style tonite — we had gotten some while we were on the road. It was not a huge display but it marked the day in a festive way…

MA to NY: The Last Leg to Home…

From Cape Cod to Long Island…

1 July 2022: Spent the day exploring a little bit around the cape and trying to find a way into the dunes or at least some sandy trails. While the map seems to say there are roads, the entrances are gated and locked, apparently they are only in use by the tour companies. At the end of the day we made the drive all the way back to New York, taking advantage of the cooler evening to do the long highway drive (since the Jeep’s AC is broken!) …

ABOUT BALD EAGLE SF

The Bald Eagle State Forest spans the high, sharp ridges of central Pennsylvania and features miles of pristine mountain streams and numerous tracts of old-growth forest. Bald Eagle forest district lies in the beautiful ridge and valley section of the state. From the limestone-rich Susquehanna Valley in the southeast to the Allegheny Mountains in the northwest, the forest district is dominated by a series of sandstone ridges, some of which reach 2,300 feet above sea level. The confluence of the west and north branches of the Susquehanna River occurs on the eastern boundary of the district, opposite the town of Northumberland. Many streams within the area originate in its forested ridges and flow in several directions, eventually emptying into the Susquehanna River. This area of the Pennsylvania was settled during the late 1700s and was the last stronghold of the mountain buffalo in the state. The large landholdings that make up much of the present-day Bald Eagle State Forest were assembled from original land grants given to Revolutionary War soldiers. They were purchased by the major logging and lumbering companies during the late 1880s and 1890s. More than 120,000 acres were either sold to the state following extensive logging or were bought at tax sales. The State Forest has designated dispersed camping locations throughout which require a free permit and there are trails for motorized recreation…
