NY: Getting Ready to Go…

Loading up the Jeep…

12 September 2025: Doing last minute prep for the roadtrip and getting the Jeep all loaded and ready to go. Tomorrow morning departure is at 5am, so as to be on time for the first ferry of the day from Port Jefferson NY to Bridgeport CT. It is going to be a very full day and everything needs to be set up tonight…

NY: A Different Kind of Stewardship…

Helping out at a wildlife rehab…

10 September 2025: Spent some time this week volunteering at a local wildlife rehab where I helped feed orphaned baby squirrels who need to be given formula multiple times a day. The little ones are so small they need to be fed with a syringe. But it’s great to see them growing stronger each day, and I hope they will all make it to a successful release once they are ready…

NY: Fire Roasted Peppers…

Preparing some food for the roadtrip…

4 September 2025: Beginning to prepare for the upcoming roadtrip. Roasted some peppers on the grill tonight and tomorrow morning will peel them and add some garlic, salt and olive oil, then put them in a container in the fridge to take to the first base camp…

NY: Late-Summer Moonrise…

Stunning moonrise tonight…

3 September 2025: Not quite a full moon, but a very bright one tonight. Was stunning as it rose up over the treeline in the early evening. Days are getting shorter and night falls even before we are ready to get dinner on the grill–a not so subtle reminder that summer is near an end…

100 DAYS JOURNEY

An epic journey crisscrossing the USA from east to west and back again, exploring some of the beautiful wild spaces that make up our “public lands.” The roadtrip covered almost 15,000 miles, much of it off-grid and off-pavement, focusing on the deserts of the American southwest. Some locations were truly “iconic” while others were little known, and the segments of independent exploration where punctuated with some fun events across the region… [read]
