The Desert Reveals: Lessons from the Sands of Time
The desert is a master of illusion. From a distance, it looks empty: a vast expanse of earth stretching toward distant mountains…
This September, we are packing up roots after decades in New York for a permanent, one-way overland journey to establish a new home base in Henderson, Nevada. Over the course of two weeks, we will be trading the familiar urban east coast for the wide-open horizons, historic byways, and rugged expanses of the southwest.
Follow our journey across the heart of America as we trace historic corridors and explore forgotten byways with plenty of fun stops en route.
Whether you are here to follow the daily route dispatches, dial in your own long-distance travel logistics, or simply take in the landscape through the lens of a cross-country transit, this is the story of our personal westward migration. Dive into the daily trail notes, waypoint guides, and dispatches from the road as the asphalt gives way to the next chapter.
Follow along with the journey in real time as we post regular dispatches from the field.

The desert is a master of illusion. From a distance, it looks empty: a vast expanse of earth stretching toward distant mountains…

A map is very good at telling us where to go. It gives us destinations like cities, national parks, historic sites, and scenic overlooks…

For generations, the West has carried the promise of something different. Not necessarily something better…
