This is the beginning of tallgrass prairie country. Before nineteenth-century settlement transformed the central United States into an agricultural engine, an ocean of tallgrass covered tens of millions of acres. Today, less than four percent of the original ecosystem remains intact. At Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge, however, a determined effort is underway to bring a piece of that lost world back to life.

Stepping out into the refuge, I find myself drawn not just to the scale of the landscape but to its smaller details. Big bluestem and Indian grass sway in long, rhythmic waves. Insects hum among the thick stalks, and grassland birds suddenly burst from cover. The prairie is far from empty. It is alive with movement, much of it easy to miss until you stop and pay attention.

And then, emerging over a rise, come the bison. Their presence changes the character of the landscape. Weighing nearly a ton, they seem almost too massive for the delicate sea of grass around them, yet they belong here completely. They connect this restored prairie to an era when millions of bison moved across the heart of the continent, grazing, wallowing, and shaping the ecology of North America simply by being part of it.

They are more than impressive animals. They are living reminders of a landscape that was nearly erased and is now, slowly and painstakingly, being brought back.

Standing on the rise, watching a heavy bull move through the tallgrass, I realize that restoration isn’t about turning back the clock. The past is gone. What places like Neal Smith offer is something different: the possibility of renewal.

That idea has been surfacing throughout this journey. Forests in Pennsylvania, once clear-cut, have grown back. Elk, hunted to extinction in the state, have returned. Native prairie, plowed under across much of the Midwest, is being painstakingly restored in the places where people have chosen to make room for it.

None of these landscapes can simply be returned to what they once were. But they can become something alive and meaningful again.

Watching the bull lower his head against the prairie wind, I find myself thinking about how that same possibility applies beyond the natural world. Beginning a new chapter doesn’t necessarily mean abandoning everything that came before. Sometimes it means making room for something that has been waiting, dormant but not necessarily lost, to take shape again.

Leaving Neal Smith, I continue west across Iowa, eventually reaching the Missouri River and crossing into Nebraska. The landscape shifts almost imperceptibly. The rich, dark soils of the Midwest give way to drier ground. Trees become more scattered, and the horizon seems to stretch farther with every mile.

Farther west, the farm fields gradually give way to one of North America’s most distinctive landscapes: the Nebraska Sandhills.

Spanning nearly twenty thousand square miles, this immense region of grass-stabilized sand dunes feels almost otherworldly. Great rolling hills rise and fall like ocean swells frozen in motion, while the two-lane highway threads through the valleys and climbs over the crests. Unlike the cultivated fields farther east, the hills seem to follow their own ancient rhythms, shaped by wind and held in place by the grasses that cover them.

As the afternoon sun drops lower, the hills turn shades of gold, their curves emerging and disappearing in the changing light. Ranches are scattered across the open country, and windmills turn slowly against the sky. There is little to interrupt the view, just mile after mile of rolling grassland beneath an enormous expanse of blue.

The emptiness is part of the appeal. There is room here for the eye to wander, for distant weather to gather along the horizon, for the mind to settle into the steady rhythm of the road. After a day spent watching the prairie come back to life in Iowa, the Sandhills offer a different kind of perspective. This landscape doesn’t need to be rebuilt. It has endured, its grasses holding the dunes in place, its vastness largely intact.

By evening, the highway descends into the Niobrara River valley, and I pull into Valentine, Nebraska. Outside, night settles over the northern plains. Behind me are two very different expressions of the prairie: one being brought back from the brink of disappearance, the other rolling across the horizon much as it has for centuries. Both are reminders of how much a landscape can hold, even when its story is not immediately apparent.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT:

THE RETURN OF THE BISON

An Icon of the Great Plains

There is no animal more tightly woven into the identity of the American West than the bison.

Yet the familiar, picturesque image of a solitary bull standing silhouetted against a Western sunset barely scratches the surface of the animal’s true legacy.

Before European expansion reduced the species to near extinction, tens of millions of bison thundered across North America, with their greatest concentrations blanketing the Great Plains. They were not merely passive inhabitants of the grasslands; they were a dominant ecological force. Through their grazing, hoof action, wallowing, and migrations, bison physically sculpted the prairie, shaping plant diversity and creating micro-habitats for dozens of other species.

For Indigenous nations across the continent, the bison was the pillar of survival and culture. Meat sustained communities; hides, bones, horn, and sinew were crafted into warm clothing, tipis, tools, bowstrings, and utensils. Beyond physical utility, the bison held—and continues to hold—profound spiritual reverence. It was a relationship built over millennia, binding human culture, animal behavior, and the landscape into a single, cohesive world.

In the 19th century, that world was deliberately shattered.

The push of westward transcontinental railroads, unchecked commercial hide hunting, and government military strategy converged in a devastating assault on the herds. Federal policy explicitly recognized that decimating the bison would starve Native resistance and force tribes onto reservations. By the late 1880s, the vast herds that once shook the earth had vanished, leaving fewer than a thousand wild animals alive on the entire continent.

The ecological disruption was staggering—but the human cost was catastrophic. The near-total eradication of the bison was an intentional weapon of dispossession, representing not just an environmental disaster, but a profound human tragedy.

And yet, the story did not end in silence.

Against all odds, the bison survived. Early conservationists, ranchers, and Indigenous leaders fought to protect the last remnants. Protected herds in places like Yellowstone, along with reintroduction programs on public, private, and sovereign tribal lands, slowly fueled a remarkable recovery.

Today, the American bison is official designated as the national mammal of the United States—a fitting title for an animal that mirrors the nation’s complex history. The bison embodies both immense abundance and near-total destruction; exploitation and stewardship; tragic loss and cultural renewal.

Driving across the prairie today, it is easy to look out over the vast, quiet grasslands stretching to the horizon and assume the Plains were always empty.

They were never empty. They were alive with motion.

    <section class="elementor-section
