We saw quite a few gators, turtles, and some interesting birds as we worked our way downstream, just appreciating the view from the river. It is always a little bit different seeing the landscape from below as we are paddling. It is a different rhythm and slower pace of exploration — not to mention how much quieter we are than when we are in the Jeep, so we have more chance of seeing animals. We stopped at the pontoon dock to have a picnic lunch, then finished the day pulling out of the water just around 5pm. On our way back to camp we caught a very beautiful sunset over a lake then settled into the prairie for a campfire and had the amazing good luck to see an owl …

FL: Silver Glen Springs…

A favorite “pirate cove”…

26 December 2021: Decided to go to Silver Glen Springs today so Chris and Khalifa could snorkel with the fish, and we packed a picnic and ate at the park, where a lot of families were enjoying the day and a pack of vultures were hanging around. It was bizarre to see the vultures there where normally you would imagine seagulls or crows, but I guess as it is Florida things are different and we were surrounded by vultures. At one point it was interesting because the vultures were washing themselves in the lake and then sitting on the fence with their wings spread out to dry. Later on we took a short hike on one of my favorite area trails that goes to these overlooks that open on the edge of Lake George and really look like what you could imagine a pirate cove might look like …

FL: Hopkins Prairie…

Christmas in the forest…

25 December 2021: We woke a little late this morning and got the fire going to make some toast with honey goat cheese and coffee, then decided to spend the day here around the prairie. We filled up the Jeep with huge logs and returned to camp to organize the wood and just enjoyed exploring the edges of our prairie environment.
